What Is a Hijab Cap? A Simple Guide to the Hijab Undercap
A hijab cap is a snug stretch cap worn under your hijab. It covers the hairline and gives the scarf a surface to grip, so the hijab stays where you set it. You will also see it called a hijab undercap, an inner cap, an underscarf or simply an undercap. They are all the same thing.
What does a hijab cap do?
A hijab cap does three jobs.
- It keeps your hair covered. The cap sits at the hairline, so nothing shows if the scarf shifts during the day.
- It gives the scarf grip. Smooth fabrics slide on bare hair. A knit cap gives them something to hold on to.
- It cuts down on pins. When the base is stable, most wraps need one pin or none.
Do you need a hijab cap?
It depends on the fabric of your hijab. The smoother and lighter the scarf, the more a cap helps.
| Hijab fabric | How much a cap helps | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Chiffon | A lot | Chiffon is smooth and slightly sheer, so it slides and needs a layer underneath |
| Printed modal | A lot | Light and slightly sheer in a single layer |
| Modal | Helpful | Soft and smooth, sits better on a cap than on bare hair |
| Jersey | Optional | The knit grips on its own, though most people still wear a cap for coverage |
| Instant hijab | Optional | The shape is already sewn, so it stays put without one |
Types of hijab caps
- Tube cap. Open at both ends and pulled on like a wide band. There is no seam at the back, so nothing presses on your head.
- Tie-back cap. Ties behind the head, which lets you adjust the fit.
- Bonnet cap. Closed at the top, so it holds all of your hair inside.
- Full underscarf. Covers the neck as well as the head, for extra coverage under a loose wrap.
A tube cap is the easiest to start with. It goes on in seconds and suits most hair lengths. For a full comparison, see our guide to hijab undercap types and how to choose.

Which fabric is best for a hijab undercap?
Stretch jersey is the most common choice. The knit has a slightly textured surface that grips the scarf, and it breathes, so it stays comfortable through a long day.
Very smooth, shiny fabrics feel soft against hair, but they give the scarf less to hold on to. If your hijab keeps sliding back, a jersey cap is usually the fix.
How to wear a hijab cap
- Tie your hair back in a low bun, then pull the cap on and settle the front edge at your hairline.
- Tuck in any loose hair at the sides and the nape.
- Place your hijab over the cap and wrap it as usual.
- Adjust the drape until it sits the way you like.

How to stop a hijab cap slipping
- Start at the hairline. A cap placed too far back will keep moving back.
- Give it an anchor. A low bun holds the cap in place better than loose hair.
- Check the fit. A one-size stretch cap should feel snug, not tight.
- Keep it clean. A freshly washed cap grips better than one with product build-up.
How to wash a hijab cap
Hand wash in cold water with mild soap, then dry flat in the shade. If you use a machine, put the cap in a mesh laundry bag and choose a gentle cold cycle. Skip the dryer, because heat wears out the stretch.
