Hijab Undercap Types: How to Choose the Right One

A hijab undercap is the close-fitting layer worn under a hijab to cover the hairline and keep the scarf in place. It is also called a hijab cap, an underscarf or an inner cap. Undercaps come in several shapes, and the right one depends on your hair, your hijab fabric and how much coverage you want. This guide compares the main hijab undercap types and shows how to choose. For the basics, start with what a hijab cap is and how to wear one.

Hijab Undercap Types at a Glance

Type Coverage Best for Keep in mind
Tube undercap Hairline and crown, open at the back Everyday wear and beginners Hair sits in a bun below the cap
Tie-back undercap Hairline and crown An adjustable fit The knot can add bulk under a thin hijab
Bonnet cap Whole head, closed at the top Long or thick hair Warmer than an open style
Ninja undercap Head, ears and neck Full coverage under a loose or sheer wrap The warmest option
Satin-lined undercap Varies by shape Less friction against hair The outer layer still needs to grip the hijab

The Five Main Types

Tube undercap

A tube undercap is a wide stretch band, open at both ends. You pull it on like a headband and settle the front edge at the hairline. There is nothing to tie, so it goes on in seconds. It is the simplest style and the easiest for beginners.

Tie-back undercap

A tie-back undercap has two ties that fasten behind the head. The ties let you set how firm the fit is, which helps if one-size caps feel too loose or too tight. The knot can add a little bulk under a thin hijab.

Bonnet cap

A hijab bonnet is closed at the top and holds all of your hair inside. It suits long or thick hair because nothing escapes at the back, and it gives a smooth, rounded shape under the scarf.

Ninja undercap

A ninja undercap covers the head, ears and neck in one piece, with an opening for the face. It is a full coverage undercap, so the neck stays covered even under a loose wrap or a sheer fabric. It is also the warmest style, which makes it better for cool weather than for summer.

Satin-lined undercap

A satin-lined undercap has a smooth lining on the inside and a knit fabric on the outside. People choose it when they want less friction against their hair. Look for one with a cotton or jersey outer layer, because the outside still has to grip the hijab.

How to Choose by Hair Type

  • Long or thick hair: a bonnet cap, or a tube undercap worn over a low bun. Avoid a cap that squeezes the bun.
  • Short hair: a tube or tie-back undercap that sits snugly at the hairline, so short strands at the front stay in.
  • Curly hair: a roomier fit that holds the hair without flattening it. A satin-lined style is a common choice.
  • Fine hair: a soft, relaxed fit. A cap that is too tight is uncomfortable over a long day.

How to Choose by Hijab Fabric

  • Chiffon and other smooth fabrics: a cotton or jersey undercap with some grip. A chiffon hijab slides on bare hair, so the cap does real work here.
  • Sheer or very light hijabs: a style with more coverage, in a color close to the hijab.
  • Modal: a light jersey undercap. Over a cap, modal stays in place and usually needs fewer pins.
  • Jersey: a thin tube undercap is enough. Jersey grips on its own, so the cap is mainly for coverage.

If slipping is your main problem, see our guide to non-slip hijab fabrics for beginners.

Which Undercap for Summer and Winter?

In hot weather, choose a breathable undercap: a thin cotton jersey tube that leaves the neck open. In cold weather, a bonnet or ninja undercap adds a layer of warmth. Whatever the season, a cotton undercap is the easiest to live with, because it breathes, grips and washes well.

What Color Undercap Should You Wear?

  • Under a dark hijab: a cap in the same color or a darker one. Black under black is the safest match.
  • Under a light or sheer hijab: a cap close to the hijab color, or a neutral close to your skin tone. A dark cap shows through light chiffon.
  • When the cap is meant to show: some styles leave a band of the cap visible at the hairline. Pick a coordinating shade rather than a clashing one.

How Many Undercaps Do You Need?

If you wear hijab every day, two or three is a practical number: one to wear, one in the wash and one spare. Keep a separate cap for the gym, and add a black and a neutral before you add colors.

Common Undercap Mistakes

  • Wearing a cap that is too tight. Snug is right; pressure is not.
  • Placing the cap too far back, so it keeps sliding.
  • Wearing a dark cap under a light, sheer hijab.
  • Putting a cap on damp hair.
  • Wearing the same cap for days without washing it.
