Sport Hijab Guide: How to Choose a Hijab for Workouts and Running

A sport hijab is a hijab made to stay in place while you move. It is stretchy, breathable and worn without pins. You will also see it called a sports hijab, an athletic hijab or a workout hijab.

What makes a good sport hijab?

  • Stretch. The fabric should move with you and return to shape.
  • Grip. It should hold without pins, even when you jump or bend.
  • Breathability. Heat needs a way out, or the hijab becomes uncomfortable within minutes.
  • Secure coverage. Short, tucked ends stay out of the way. Long loose ends do not.
  • No pins. Pins can hurt you if you fall, so a sport hijab should not need them.

Best fabrics for a workout hijab

Fabric Good for sport? Why
Cotton jersey with spandex Yes Stretches four ways, grips on its own, breathes and stays opaque
Polyester and spandex blend Yes Stretches to fit and holds its shape, common in pull-on styles
Modal Light activity only Soft and breathable, but less stretch and grip
Chiffon No Smooth and slippery, needs pins to stay put

Wrap or pull-on: which style works best?

Short tucked wrap. Wrap a jersey hijab snugly around the head and tuck the ends into your top. Nothing flaps while you run.

Pull-on instant hijab. One sewn piece that goes on in seconds. It is the quickest option before a class or a game.

Turban style. Leaves the neck free for cooling. Pair it with a high-neck top if you want neck coverage.

How should an athletic hijab fit?

It should feel snug around the face, not tight. The front edge sits at the hairline and the ends are tucked away.

Test it before you start. Shake your head, look down and do a few jumping jacks. If it shifts now, it will shift more later.

Choosing by activity

  • Gym and weights. A short tucked jersey wrap stays clear of machines and bars.
  • Running. Pick a light jersey and tuck every loose end so nothing catches the wind.
  • Team sports. A pull-on style is fastest. If you play in an organized league, check its uniform rules first.
  • Yoga and Pilates. Inversions pull a scarf backward, so wear a snug cap underneath.
  • Swimming. Regular hijabs are not made for the pool. Use a hijab designed for swimming.

Do you need a cap under a sports hijab?

A hijab cap keeps hair contained and gives the scarf a base to grip. Under a jersey hijab, it usually means you need no pins at all. Read more in our hijab cap guide.

How to wash workout hijabs

Wash after every session. Use a gentle cold machine cycle or hand wash, then dry flat. Skip bleach and the dryer, because heat wears out the stretch fibers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a sport hijab the same as a sports hijab?
Yes. Sport hijab, sports hijab, athletic hijab and workout hijab all mean a hijab made for exercise.
Can I wear a regular hijab to the gym?
A jersey hijab works well. Chiffon and other smooth fabrics slide and need pins, so leave those at home.
Do sport hijabs need pins?
No. A stretchy knit worn over a cap holds on its own, and going without pins is safer.
Which color is best for a workout hijab?
Darker shades hide sweat marks better than light ones. Black, olive and navy are easy choices.
